The nearest galaxies to
the Milky Way are easily seen with an amateur telescope. Like Andromeda and the Magellan Clouds can be
seen with the naked eye. Approximately the Milky Way dwarf galaxies orbiting
some. In 1994 the discovery of the SagDEG (Sagittarius Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy)
to 88,000 lights years away, and in 2003 the Canes Major galaxy at 25,000 light
years. Are the two closest so far discovered?
Most
important close galaxies
Andromeda: to 2.5
million light years from Earth. It is a massive spiral, twice the size of the
Milky Way. It is the largest galaxy in the Local Group. It contains hundreds of
billions of stars and many nebulae. In its center is a super massive black
hole. It is bright and is the farthest object that can be seen with the naked
eye. It is estimated that in about 6,000 million years, the Milky Way and
Andromeda will collide.
Small
and Large Magellanic Cloud: two satellite galaxies of the
Milky Way. This means that the Milky Lacteal is attracted to their severity,
and in the future be part of it. So called because Magellan was the first
European explorer noted that, in the sixteenth century. The Great Cloud is
170,000 light years away, and the Small Cloud to 210,000 light years. They are
irregular dwarf galaxies, with many nebulae and young stars. In the southern
hemisphere are seen with the naked eye like two isolated white clouds of the Milky
Way across the sky.
Triangle
is the third largest galaxy in the Local Group, behind Andromeda and the Milky
Way. It is farthest 3 million light years. It can only see with a telescope Spiral
form similar to our galaxy. Andromeda is believed that the appeals to their
severity, and could even orbit around it. In the galaxy of Triangle is the
largest emission nebula known: NGC 604.
